MELBOURNE, Australia — The United States Open champion Naomi Osaka was a set down again at the Australian Open and looking for a bit of inspiration.
She thought of how 20-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas had stunned the 20-time major winner Roger Federer and how Frances Tiafoe has advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time. This helped her pull herself together Monday to reach the last eight, too.
The fourth-seeded Osaka had a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 fourth-round win over No. 13 Anastasija Sevastova to reach the singles quarterfinals at a major for the second time.
The No. 4 men’s seed, Alexander Zverev, was not nearly as fortunate, being swept out by No. 16 Milos Raonic, 6-1, 6-1, 7-6 (5). Raonic next takes on No. 28 Lucas Pouille, a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (2) winner over No. 11 Borna Coric. Zverev, who failed to reach a Grand Slam singles quarterfinal for the 14th time in 15 tries, smashed his racket into a mangled mess during the second set.
Osaka will play sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina, who fended off five break points in a game in the third set that went to deuce 11 times, contained 28 points and was pivotal in a momentum-swinging 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 win over Madison Keys, a United States Open finalist in 2017.
“I wasn’t really sure what to do at a point. I just try to stick in there,” Osaka said. “And also I was watching all these kids winning, like, last night Tsitsipas beat Federer and I was like, ‘Whoa’ — so I decided I wanted to do well, too.”
“I think that’s everyone’s dream,” she added.
In her third-round win over Hsieh Su-Wei, the 21-year-old Osaka received a warning from the umpire for spiking her racket after losing the first set. She was down a break in the second set, too
Against Sevastova, “I was thinking I’ve been in this position before and actually last time, it was a little bit worse,” Osaka said.
Another win now, and there’s potential for Osaka to have a rematch of the United States Open final against Serena Williams.
But Osaka is surely not expecting an easy ride against Svitolina.
Coming off a win at the WTA Finals, Svitolina is aiming to do what Caroline Wozniacki did last year and follow a title at the season-ending championship with a breakthrough major title in Australia.
For a quarter of an hour on Day 8, Svitolina served and served, and served, tossing the ball into the sun, in a desperate bid to hold a game in the third set against Keys.
After that huge hold, she broke the 17th-seeded Keys’s serve in at her first opportunity in the next game and cruised from there.
“I was happy I could handle the pressure at 1-1 in the third set,” Svitolina said. “It was very hard because the sun was just burning my eyes when I was tossing the ball. Very happy I could win that game.”
She is taking an 0-3 record in Grand Slam quarterfinals into her next match against Osaka, but is taking a different mind-set.
Winning in Singapore “gave me huge boost of confidence, so I don’t think about the past anymore,” she said. “I only look forward.”
Apart from the second set, Keys did nor quite find her range with her ground strokes, making 34 unforced errors. She dropped her first two service games in the match, and she missed very narrowly on some crucial points.
“I think that in the third set, we obviously had a really long game at 1-all, and that was where all the momentum swung,” Keys said. “For me to get broken easily right after, I think I lost all the momentum that I had in the second set. It feels like it went really fast.”
In other men’s matches, No. 23 Pablo Carreno Busta left the court yelling at the chair umpire after a disagreement in the concluding tiebreaker of his 6-7 (8), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) loss to No. 8-seeded Kei Nishikori in a 5-hour, 5-minute marathon that was the longest match of the tournament.
It was the second time in four rounds Nishikori has had to come back after losing the first two sets.
Nishikori was trailing by 8-5 in the fifth-set tiebreaker when a Carreno Busta shot clipped the net, and Nishikori reset to hit a backhand down the line after the ball landed near the doubles alley.
A line judge called it out as Nishikori hit the ball down the line, and Carreno Busta was nowhere close to playing it. He challenged the decision, and Hawk-Eye showed the ball hitting the line, but the point remained with Nishikori instead of being replayed.
After arguing with umpire Thomas Sweeney, Carreno Busta lost the next three points and Nishikori sealed the match with an ace. After shaking hands with Nishikori, Carreno Busta threw his bag into the court before collecting it and yelling at the chair umpire as he left the arena.
Nishikori’s quarterfinal foe will be No. 1-seeded and six-time champion Novak Djokovic, who overcame a couple of tumbles to the court and a series of energy-sapping baseline exchanges — one point lasted 42 strokes — to beat No. 15 Daniil Medvedev, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3.
After topping Medvedev in a 3-hour, 15-minute struggle to get back to the quarterfinals for the first time in three years, Djokovic joked during an on-court interview: “Since I guess my next opponent is watching, I’m feeling fantastic. I’ve never felt fresher in my life.”
